Dreams: Manufacturing excellence at scale
Dreams reveals how the Manufacturing Guild Mark has helped validate its manufacturing standards, drive measurable improvements in quality and reinforce a culture of continuous improvement.
For almost 40 years, Dreams has manufactured beds and mattresses in the UK, combining large-scale production with a continued focus on craftsmanship, quality and continuous improvement.
At the company’s Bed Factory, 230 colleagues manufacture more than 292,000 mattresses and 238,000 divans and headboards each year. Achieving The Furniture Makers’ Company’s Manufacturing Guild Mark provided independent recognition of the standards behind this operation – while also helping Dreams identify opportunities to improve them further.
Matt Richardson, production director at Dreams, said: “Being awarded the Manufacturing Guild Mark was a significant achievement for everyone at our Bed Factory. It recognised not only the quality and craftsmanship that go into every product we make, but also the dedication and expertise of our 230 colleagues.
“The award provided independent validation of the high standards we work hard to uphold every day and recognises the expertise, craftsmanship and commitment that have underpinned almost 40 years of manufacturing at Dreams.”

Putting standards to the test
A key part of achieving the Manufacturing Guild Mark is its rigorous independent audit, which assesses manufacturers across a comprehensive range of criteria, including manufacturing, quality, people, governance and sustainability.
For Dreams, the process validated many of its existing systems while providing a valuable external perspective on where further improvements could be made.
“The audit gave us confidence that the systems and processes we have built are delivering the high standards we expect,” Matt said. “It confirmed that our approach to manufacturing excellence, colleague development and governance is both robust and effective, but it also encouraged us to challenge ourselves.”
One area identified was the opportunity to strengthen quality assurance and create greater consistency in how standards were applied across the factory.
Dreams responded by enhancing its quality assurance checks and operator training across its mattress, divan and headboard operations. Over the following 12 months, its Right First Time performance increased from 96.8% to 98.1%, while internal quality defects fell by 14%.
Matt added: “The independent assessment helped us not only validate what was already working well, but identify where we could go further and continue raising standards across the business.”
Delivering quality at scale
Maintaining consistency while manufacturing hundreds of thousands of products each year requires quality to be embedded throughout the production process.
Dreams carries out approximately 1,500 quality checks every week across its mattresses, divans and headboards, with standards monitored from material selection and supplier relationships through to production, testing and final inspection.
“Our end-to-end approach to quality best demonstrates the standards recognised by the Manufacturing Guild Mark,” Matt said. “We manufacture almost 300,000 mattresses each year, yet quality remains embedded at every stage.
“This rigorous approach helps us deliver consistency at scale and ensures every product leaving our Bed Factory meets the high expectations of both our business and our customers.”
Investment in technology and automation has helped Dreams improve product quality, consistency and operational efficiency, but the company sees investment in its workforce as equally important.
Development initiatives include a Level 3 Team Leader apprenticeship programme, the North Lancs apprenticeship scheme and the Manufacturing Institute’s Continuous Improvement Course, helping colleagues develop their skills while building the company’s future leadership capability.

Embedding sustainability
Sustainability is another important part of Dreams’ manufacturing approach, encompassing material sourcing, production efficiency and waste management.
The company holds FSC® certification across all wooden products manufactured at its Bed Factory. Last year, 93% of the 2.15 million items it produced were classified by Dreams as sustainable, while fabrics used across its bed frame range are now made using recycled ocean plastic.
Matt said: “Through better material utilisation, recycling initiatives and ongoing process improvements, our aim is to reduce the environmental impact of our operations while continuing to deliver the quality and durability our customers expect.”
Independent recognition that builds confidence
For Dreams, the Manufacturing Guild Mark also provides an important external endorsement that can be communicated to customers, suppliers and other stakeholders.
“The Manufacturing Guild Mark provides customers, suppliers and stakeholders with added confidence that our products are manufactured to high industry standards,” Matt said. “It reinforces the trust people place in the Dreams brand and our credentials as a major UK manufacturer.”
Crucially, achieving the Mark has not been treated as the end of the process. Dreams continues to monitor customer feedback, conduct quality audits and process reviews, and track key measures covering quality, efficiency and service.
Matt said: “Our colleagues play a vital role through their commitment to quality, adherence to established processes and willingness to share best practice across the factory.
“The Guild Mark is not treated as an end point, but as part of our ongoing commitment to improving our manufacturing operation year after year.”
Why other manufacturers should apply
For businesses considering applying for the Manufacturing Guild Mark, Dreams believes the value lies not only in achieving the accreditation but in the independent scrutiny that comes with the process.
Matt concluded: “We would encourage any manufacturer committed to continuous improvement to consider applying. The process is far more than an assessment. It’s an opportunity to take an independent look at your business, celebrate what’s working well and identify areas where you can improve further.
“For us, the insights gained through the process have been just as valuable as the recognition itself. It gives our colleagues confidence in the standards they deliver every day, while providing customers, partners and the wider industry with independent validation of our commitment to manufacturing excellence.”
