What the designers say about the Design Guild Mark
This week (21-24 September) a selection of the designs that were awarded a Design Guild Mark this year will be showcased on a feature stand at 100% Design at Olympia London.
Simon Pengelly, winner of the Jonathan Hindle Prize for Excellence and the John Makepeace Prize for Innovation, has designed the stand, which can be located in the Interiors hall at stand L604.
We asked this year’s winning designers what they think of the Design Guild Mark. Here is what they said:
DGM 144 Shin Azumi
It is a great honour to be awarded a Design Guild Mark. It has a special value and meaning for me as a designer. It is the appreciation for my creativity, my skill and achievement. I also share this great honour with the client manufacturer that made a big effort and realised the wonderful result. I feel good design is always the result of good collaboration between the designer and the manufacturer.
DGM 145 Tomoko Azumi
I am very glad to receive the award in recognition of my long term collaboration with ercol, and this acknowledgement of British design excellence. I would like to celebrate this together with ercol’s technical staff, as the achievement would not have been possible without them.
I believe this award is bringing us good recognition of design and creating more opportunity for customers to try the Flow chair, in shops all over in the UK.
DGM 146 Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby
It’s great that a chair, designed in London, engineered in Milan and made by a US company, can be recognised by such a prestigious British organisation. It is brilliant to be recognised by the Furniture Makers’ Company. The Design Guild Mark is a real accolade to receive.
DGM 147 & 148 Samuel Chan
The Design Guild Mark is increasingly recognised by the consumer as a trusted indicator of excellence both in the design and the making of a piece of furniture. Having a DGM on my work is a really helpful endorsement. It gives my customers the assurance that their design judgement is shared by those in the know.
DGM 149 Paul O’Leary, director of deVOL
We are grateful to win a Design Guild Mark in recognition of the Sebastian Cox Kitchen by deVOL, a design that has won multiple awards and has been lauded by worldwide press as a completely new style: “Urban Rustic”. Surprisingly made totally from sustainable British timbers, this kitchen encompasses everything deVOL and Sebastian are passionate about; good taste, traditional techniques and modern innovation.
DGM 150 Adam Daghorn
I’m delighted that the Ashworth Desk has been awarded a Design Guild Mark for the ‘highest standards’ in furniture design. I’m extremely proud to be associated with The Furniture Makers’ Company and to have been considered for the prestigious award.
DGM 152 & 153 Mark Gabbertas
Delighted as ever. It seems the quality of the work submitted gets better every year. ’The Design Guild Mark is surely the most important British design award programme around, and is a superb advertisement for the variety and quality of British design.
DGM 155 David Irwin
The Design Guild Mark award is one of the greatest measures of quality and excellence within the British furniture industry, providing validation of a product’s design integrity and commercial viability. I am delighted to receive this prestigious award for the Hardy chair, it is a great honour.
DGM 156 Max Lamb
To receive any award acknowledging one’s creative work is always a great honour, not least a prestigious Design Guild Mark awarded by The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers who are so specific and committed to our industry. I am delighted my collaboration with Benchmark Furniture, whose celebration of good craftsmanship and respect for quality materials deserves recognition alone, has been commended in such a way.
DGM 157 Magnus Long
To be awarded a Design Guild Mark by this discerning jury is great news for our design, and is a testament of our client’s dedication to quality British manufacture.
DGM 158 Timothée Mion
To receive a Design Guild Mark for the HM221 makes me very proud.
This collection is the result of my first furniture project in collaboration with Hitch Mylius who provided me with the opportunity to bring my ideas to realisation and to market. For this and for the given accolade I am extremely grateful.
DGM 159 Morgan Studio
The Design Guild Mark sets the standard of quality, originality and innovation in British design standards we at Morgan use as a benchmark for every design project. We are incredibly proud that the Kyoto collection has been recognised in this year’s awards and to be acknowledged alongside some of the leading names in our industry.
DGM 160 Simon Pengelly
It is a wonderful endorsement for a product to receive a DGM, recognising the work that goes on behind the scenes in developing product to a level high enough to be awarded such a prestigious honour.
DGM 161 Alexander White
I am deeply honoured to have been awarded a Design Guild Mark and proud that my efforts as a designer are recognised to be of national excellence by this historically praised organisation. Joining such a strong line of designers to receive this accolade means a lot to me.
