There was noticeable curiosity from the design world when we announced we were launching a new category for the first time in the Design Guild Mark’s 10 year history.

That curiosity soon changed to intrigue when we announced at the 2018 edition of Sleep + Eat that the category we were launching was 2D.

For those of you who are new to the Design Guild Mark, what we mean by 2D is a fabric, textile, wall covering, floor covering or carpet. To put it simply, a flat or flattish design…

Three very different 2D designs were awarded a Design Guild Mark last year by our respected judging committee. What was especially pleasing was that they all came from differing sub-sectors of the 2D world.

The Alchemy Collection for Bute Fabrics

Alchemy is a vibrant contemporary fabric with textured flecks. Bute has a unique origin story. The mill was founded in 1947 by the fifth Marquees of Bute following the Second World War to create jobs for returning service people. The company continues to be supported by the Bute family.

Jitterbug from the Shoreditch Range for Axminster Carpets

Axminster Carpets challenged the weaving capabilities of the loom and knowledge of wool and yarns to create an innovative weave. The weave’s effect is achieved by mixing different yarn weights and weaves. Axminster wanted to incorporate these in a design that retains its historic presence, but captures texture visually and through touch.
