Two-time Sustainability Award winner Silentnight Beds hosted a Best Practice Day on the subject earlier this month, revealing the issues the company faced and steps it has taken to become an environmental champion and sustainable business.

The event was run by Silentnight operations director Rob Livingstone and Peter Holland of Linear Consulting, and took place at the bed manufacturer’s Barnoldswick head office.

The workshop covered all aspects of how to create an integrated sustainable business, including design/product process, waste, energy, packaging, transport, procurement, end of life and corporate social responsibility.

Peter, who organises the Best Practice Days on behalf of the Company, said: “I’d like to say a big thank you to our hosts Silentnight for an insightful and engaging day where we had the opportunity to dive deep into the keys of creating a fully integrated sustainable business. We all took away fresh ideas and action points to improve and implement in our own businesses.”

Rob said: “The event was a great opportunity to share experiences and observations of this far-reaching and increasingly important sector of our industry. Due to the various backgrounds of the attendees, we were able to explore different perspectives and openly discuss the issues that each of our companies are facing as we move towards a more sustainable business. Although we hosted the event, the level of participation and interaction was invigorating and we came away with many new ideas that will help our own business in the future.”

The Best Practice Day is a free event open to all corporate members of The Furniture Makers’ Company is designed to facilitate open innovation and shared learning among businesses.

The biannual event is hosted by a corporate member with each workshop focusing on a particular theme that the hosting company excels in.
