More than 100 people attended the second New Makers’ Conference, organised by The Furniture Makers’ Company and Artichoke, at the Wells and Mendip Museum on 2 June.

Sponsored by Axminster Tools & Halstock, the conference provided a unique platform for experienced furniture designers and makers to connect and network with those who have recently embarked on their career journeys.

Renowned figures from the furniture design and making world attended the conference as guest speakers, captivating the audience with their wealth of experience and inspiring stories. Among the notable speakers were Bruce Hodgson, CEO of Artichoke; Eleanor Lakelin, renowned wood sculptor; John Makepeace, award-winning designer maker; Chris Hyde, director of curriculum at Activate Learning; Sean Evelegh, award winning, independent designer-maker; Mark Boddington, CEO of Silver Lining; Hattie Speed, creator of the multi-disciplinary project, This Girl Makes; Katie Walker, founder of Katie Walker Furniture; and David Dewing, Past Master and South West chairman at The Furniture Makers’ Company.

Throughout the day, delegates immersed themselves in an array of thought-provoking discussions, engaging presentations, and practical workshops. The conference’s agenda covered a wide range of topics, including the journey from training to entrepreneurship and the importance of effective marketing, exhibiting, and retailing. Participants had the opportunity to learn from industry experts, gaining invaluable insights and advice to guide them on their path to success.
