A first-year degree student from the Rycotewood Furniture Centre, Oxford, has been recognised for his outstanding craftsmanship after receiving this year’s award at the private view of the college’s Summer Show.

Court assistant Debbie Brown and Past Master Tony Smart attended the exhibition to view the pieces on display and selected the same piece for the award.

The award was presented to James Castle, whose beautifully crafted table impressed with its originality, design and exceptional quality. Made from oak and slate, the oriental-style table incorporates a built-in tray and was created especially for his sister, who is engaged in oriental studies.

One of the most distinctive features is the hand-carved finish around the black edge, creating an elegant ripple effect. The integrated tray features a slate base, providing both visual contrast and practical functionality.

In presenting the award at the Summer Show private view, Debbie and Tony congratulated James on his imaginative design, his skilful use of contrasting materials, and the exceptionally high standard of craftsmanship demonstrated throughout the piece. His work stood out among an impressive collection of exhibits and represents a remarkable achievement for a first-year degree student at the Rycotewood Furniture Centre.
