It’s the second week of the 2019 Young Professional Industry Experience – our three week intensive programme where aspiring young people are given the opportunity to visit and understand all areas of the furniture industry, including materials, designing, manufacturing, pricing, marketing, sales, and customer service.
This week the young professionals are visiting Howdens, DFS, Cabinet Maker, Parker Knoll and Blum.
Today we meet Oliver Clegg, a quality assurance engineer at Camira Fabrics.

Describe yourself in three words

Fortunate textiles apprentice.

What attracted you to the company you work for?

I stumbled upon the textiles and furniture making industry. I’m pleased that I took the decision not to go to further education and instead applied for jobs near home. I started by handing my CV to Camira Fabrics’ main manufacturing facility near Holmfirth, with the hope of landing a job. After walking in for the first time as an apprenticeship candidate the decision was quickly made, I wanted to work at Camira. If I had to single out just one thing that I love about working at Camira, which is a very difficult task, then it would certainly be the people. I have never experienced a group of people who have such an insatiable desire and competence to work as a single, harmonious team in order to reach one main goal: to become the natural choice for fabric solutions worldwide. It’s this single aspect that I love the most about Camira.

What’s your career goal right now?

I want to give back to Camira especially as they have given me unconditional support in my role. The company has really supported my continuous professional development and provided me with opportunities. In the future, I want to further establish myself within the company while being able to make decisions that help others to develop, just as I have.

Which company are you most looking forward to visiting on the YPIE programme?

I’m most looking forward to visiting Herman Miller. After the visit, I hope to gain a much more holistic view of how my quality assurance related work impacts furniture manufacturers as well as developing fresh ideas on how I can work to have the best possible outcome for upholsterers.
