Meet the makers exhibiting at Evolution of Tradition: Marc Fish
Evolution of Tradition, a new exhibition of contemporary bespoke furniture designed by some of the UK’s most distinguished craftspeople, takes place from 2 until 5 October this autumn at Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. The exhibition represents an exciting collaboration between The Furniture Makers’ Company and Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, the world’s premier design destination.
Fifteen makers, including Marc Fish, are exhibiting 28 pieces at the exhibition.
Marc Fish and the Robinson House Studio’s work blurs the boundaries of furniture, art, design and sculpture and has quickly achieved international acclaim, with the work being sought after. His pieces are not constructed using a rigid design process, they are the result of an evolution of ideas: an initial concept comes together in a process of innovation and experimentation.
Marc’s series of pieces based on shells were inspired by the Victorian’s obsession with natural history, the capture, extermination of exotic and rare species and the eventual display of these creatures. The style in which these were exhibited was often slightly macabre by today’s taste with taxidermy being very popular. Marc took the inspiration forward with an oversized Nautilus shell-the first of the series.
Marc is continuing his work with veneers, creating inter-curving sculptural pieces based on natural and life forms.
