As the City of London livery company for the furnishing industry, our membership is as diverse as the many people, functions and sectors that work within this wonderful trade.

Every month we cast the spotlight on one of our members, learning about their job and discovering what it is about The Furniture Makers’ Company that resonates with them. This month it is the turn of freeman Chad Punchard.

Tell me about yourself, background and company you work for.

Trading as ‘Punchline Bespoke’, my main areas of work are bespoke cabinetry and furniture where we design, build and install our projects offering our clients the full bespoke package.

How did you break into the industry and what is it about the sector that made you stay in it?

I undertook a general carpentry apprenticeship for three years. It wasn’t until I went self-employed and started playing around with making furniture and being creative that I fell in love with woodworking. There is always a new client with a different idea that keeps me and my skills on point. Learning new methods and using different materials is always exciting. I find being able to imagine something and then figuring out how to make it and bring it to life very rewarding.

When did you first hear about The Furniture Makers’ Company and who encouraged you to join?

I did some research on the internet for furniture makers and organisations where I can surround myself with likeminded people to learn from and share ideas. I stumbled upon the Furniture Makers’ website and contacted the office where I spoke with Sally Kent, the membership and events manager, who was very warm, welcoming and helpful.

Can you share a highlight or fond memory of your time involved with The Furniture Makers’ Company?

My freeman admission ceremony in July 2022 was my first memorable moment with the Company, where I got to see Furniture Makers’ Hall, meet the Master and Wardens and network with some amazing people.

Have you got any advice to any new members regarding getting the most out of membership?

At this moment in time I’m still learning and getting to grips with everything, however I would highly recommend anyone that’s in the industry and wants to be a part of something special to join the Company. I’m excited to be part of it.

Finally, tell us something your fellow members may not know about you – a secret talent, an interest outside of the world of furniture.

Aged 16-21 I was part of the Osprey’s Rugby Academy and represented Wales at under 16s. I’ve also been involved in mountain biking and surfing as hobbies. I love to travel, explore new cultures and try different cuisines. One of my favourite things to do is sit at a coffee house and watch the world go by.
