Making the ordinary extraordinary
How do you make a piece of upholstery special and memorable? This is what designer Philippe Malouin pondered before designing the Group chair and sofa for SCP.
When it comes to a staple design like a sofa, comfort over style is often the driving factor. However Phillipe wanted Group to be something different.
The Group collection comprises an occasional upholstered chair, a compact sofa and a standard size sofa.
The occasional upholstered chair revolves on a black powder coated steel swivel base.
The design uses primary shapes in a concise way to form the base, back and seat. The frame is made from solid beech and birch plywood.
The seat base is webbed and has a seat and lumbar cushion made from feather and foam.
Earlier this year Philippe was awarded his first Design Guild Mark for the range, so he clearly achieved what he set out to do.
During this year’s Design Guild Mark judging day, we interviewed a number of the applicants to understand the creative process behind their pieces. Watch our short video with Phillipe and Sheridan Coakley, founder of SCP, to find out more about Group and the design journey Phillipe undertook to create it.
