Liveryman Gil Carter presented Stanley Wharton Award

Liveryman Gil Carter has been awarded the Stanley Wharton Award for his exemplary services to The Furniture Makers’ Company.

The award lauds and celebrates the contribution a member has made to the Company with the awardee chosen by the incumbent Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company. It is named after the Company’s first Master, Stanley Wharton, a director of Maples, who led the then Furniture Makers’ Guild from 1952 to 1954.

Gil has been a member for almost 27 years having joined as a freeman on 3 December 1996. He was selected to receive the prize by Master Tony Attard OBE DL who presented Gil with the award on Friday 24 March at Furniture Makers’ Hall.

The Master said: “Ever since I have been a liveryman, I have known Gil as a welcoming and warm member of the livery. He has worked on many committees including the present communications committee. Over the years, Gil has been a consummate supporter of the committee, taking on the role of unofficial ‘red pen’ and website editor, in the days before we had a marketing resource in the office. He continues to be a much appreciated and respected member of the committee. I am sure that Stanley would have been pleased that Gil will receive the award that bears his name.”

Commenting on the award, Gil said: “It is a great honour to have received the Stanley Wharton Award. It has been a privilege to have contributed to the Company’s work in supporting the furnishing industry, and the fellowship enjoyed while participating with liverymen and colleagues has been a constant pleasure.”
