Corporate member wins fourth consecutive recycling award
Corporate member Designer Contracts has been named ‘Take Back Partner of the Year’ for the fourth time by Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) at the annual awards and conference held at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham.
Its national distribution manager, Glen Mitchell, who made a presentation to the conference about the company’s recycling initiatives, was also named ‘Recycling Champion of the Year’.
Designer Contracts managing director Peter Kelsey said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be regarded so highly by Carpet Recycling UK for both our recycling efforts – and for Glenn who works tirelessly to ensure the systems are in place to divert over 250 tonnes of waste from landfill each year.
“We also won the ‘Take Back’ award in 2015, 2016 and 2017, so to win for a fourth time is fantastic!”
The company’s ‘Take Back Scheme’ works by diverting 90 percent of unfitted carpet waste through waste solution companies who convert it into a sustainable resource.
In addition to the ‘Take Back Scheme’, the company has invested heavily in its equipment, which includes a £40,000 bailing machine that helps to recycle over 70 tonnes of cardboard and over 20 tonnes of plastic each year. Its transport fleet has also been carefully considered to reduce impact on the environment where possible, utilising aerodynamic ‘teardrop’ trailers which can reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The company also attained Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) accreditation, which is given to businesses that ensure its vehicles are driven in a manner that minimises fuel consumption and emissions.
Designer Contracts was recently named in the Business Reporter’s Best of British Campaign, which recognises success stories in British business. The accolade was awarded to just 10 companies in the UK.
The company operates across 15 UK regional facilities. As well as flooring, the company provides curtains and blinds, furniture and lighting, and operates a show home and contract-focused interior design services division.
