Udon Stools by Anton Mikkonen

Design and architecture firm BDP is hosting an exhibition of new product design work by students on the BA Furniture and Product Design course at The Cass, London Metropolitan University developed as part of a live project with prestigious London design brand SCP during Clerkenwell Design Week (21-23 May).

The students were asked to generate designs that would fit with the SCP Boxed collection, which is typified by items that can be posted easily to customers. The pieces exhibited are either products or small furniture, sensitive to the existing collection’s use of materials and processes. In response, the group have produced a broad range of pieces ranging from small tables, stools, storage to a dustpan and brush. All of these objects have been beautifully made using the extensive workshop facilities at the Cass.

Talking about the exhibition, Hannah Rose, third Year Furniture & Product student said: “It was great having such an open brief from SCP, and really inspiring getting to design something for their collection. It was useful as designers to learn about how products are boxed and shipped, and it also brought a fun and unique element to the project”.

Will Smith, senior lecturer in Furniture and Product Design, said:  “This is a brilliant opportunity for the Furniture and Product students at the Cass. To showcase one of their live projects with the prestigious SCP furniture brand at BDP offers them a professional platform during Clerkenwell Design Week – the centre of London’s design industry.”

The Furniture Makers’ Company supports the Cass and some of its students with bursaries and scholarships.
