Alun Heslop wins Furniture Makers’ design prize
Bespoke furniture maker Alun Heslop of chaircreative was named winner of The Furniture Makers’ Company’s Design Prize during the Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design show (20-29 August).
Alun won the award for his Dragon Kre chair in cast bronze. Alun specialises in the design and creation of exceptional sculptural chairs and seating, producing distinctive, functional works of art for the 21st century.
Alun said: “The piece was inspired on many different co-existing levels; through animalistic form and the shape of the journey as we move through landscape. Although not fire breathing this chair has certainly been forged by fire and commands a powerful, dominant presence.”
Commenting on Alun’s winning design, the judges said: “A distinctive, striking and recognisable design, the Dragon Kre chair in bronze is immaculately executed, representing a successful transition from an idea developed in wood over several iterations. As much a work of art as a piece of furniture.”
Hugh Miller and Philip Dobbins were both Highly Commended for their designs.
Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design has become the largest selling exhibition of high quality bespoke furniture in the country and every year it draws visitors and exhibitors from around the world.
