The mainstream adoption of 3D printing is revolutionising the world of design and manufacture.

There was a time that the idea of uploading a blueprint or schematic for it to instantly start creating a product layer by layer would be confined to the pages of science fiction novels. However advances in this technology have resulted in 3D printing becoming a very possible and sustainable revelation in manufacturing, offering customisation and variation without tooling costs.

Wishing to embrace this radical, new disruptive technology, Morgan Furniture teamed up with Mehran Gharleghi, architect at Studio INTEGRATE, to create the Rio Table – one of the 34 pieces awarded a Design Guild Mark in 2017.

Available in two varying heights and widths, Rio combines a 3D printed polyamide component ‘basket’ type structure that links the turned timber legs to the glass top.

In the latest of our series of Design Guild Mark films, Katerina Zachariades, design director at Morgan Furniture, talks about the Rio Table and how it came to be.
