The Canopy Collection

The Canopy Collection reimagines the traditional rush-seated chair for a modern audience. The Marchmont Workshop, the UK’s last full-time maker of rush-seated chairs, has produced designs based on techniques passed down for over 130 years. With this collection, those time-honoured skills are applied to a more contemporary form, opening the craft to a wider audience.

Inspired by the woodlands of the Scottish Borders – where ash dieback has left a visible mark – each chair is made from green wood, blending tradition with innovation. Turned rear legs extend into hand-carved, winding branches, echoing the natural form of the ash tree. These rise to meet a sweeping, steam-bent crest that forms a canopy, gently supporting the sitter above a hand woven rush seat.

Each piece is unique, and when grouped together, they evoke a small woodland. The collection includes a bar stool, dining chair, and lounge chair.
