The Worshipful Company of Woolmen is once again organising the hugely popular Sheep Drive across Southwark Bridge, and The Furniture Makers’ Company have paired up with the Wheelwrights’ Company to enter a team. Further information about the event can be seen here.

The Freedom of the City of London was originally a grant of the right to trade in the capital and Freemen were exempt from the usual tolls when they drove their livestock across London Bridge to the markets – a valuable economic privilege in medieval times. Liverymen (and those about to be admitted) are very welcome to apply to exercise their right to drive sheep over the bridge!

The time slot for our drive is 1.14pm, although registration needs to be 30 minutes earlier.  We may also try and arrange an informal lunch in the area, details tbc. Spectators are very welcome to attend at no cost, although they would not be allowed into the sheep driving area.

Participants will each drive their sheep part of the length of the bridge; there will be a specific sheep pen for photo opportunities and a prize for the best dressed participant.  There will be the usual health and safety features incorporated into the design of the day to make it a safe but enjoyable family friendly day out.  A personal certificate signed by the Lady Mayor and Master Woolman will be given to all participating Freemen of the City confirming that their rights have been exercised successfully and in accordance with current tradition.

The Livery and Wool Fair, with specialist wool related trades, products, crafts and demonstrations, in addition to an eclectic selection of food and drink will also take place on the bridge.

A place in the team will be £75.  Please let us know by Monday 22 June if you would like to take part.  A link to the organiser’s registration and payment page will then be sent, with payment needed by 30 June to secure the place.

Places in the team are very strictly limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.  We are expecting a good response so please reply as soon as possible to reserve a place.
