Furniture Makers strengthens ties with RNLI through visit to Tower Lifeboat Station

Members of The Furniture Makers’ Company have strengthened their relationship with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) with a special behind-the-scenes visit to Tower Lifeboat Station, two years after the unveiling of the blue plaque at Furniture Makers’ Hall commemorating the site of the RNLI’s first headquarters.

The visit celebrated the continuing association between the two organisations, which began in 2024 when a blue plaque was unveiled at Furniture Makers’ Hall to mark the location of the RNLI’s first head office, established in 1824.

Located on the Victoria Embankment, Tower Lifeboat Station is the RNLI’s busiest station, responding to hundreds of incidents each year on the tidal River Thames.

During the visit, members were welcomed by past and present members of the lifeboat crew, who delivered an illustrated presentation covering the history of the RNLI, its lifesaving mission and the vital work carried out by Tower Lifeboat Station. Members also enjoyed an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the station, learning more about its facilities, specialist equipment and operational capabilities.

Immediate Past Master Debbie Johnson said: “Our blue plaque commemorates an important chapter in the RNLI’s history and serves as a lasting reminder of the connection between our two organisations. It is wonderful to see that relationship continue to grow through opportunities like this.

“Visiting Tower Lifeboat Station gave our members a fascinating insight into the professionalism, dedication and commitment of the volunteer crews who save lives on the Thames every day. We are extremely grateful to everyone at the station for their warm welcome and for sharing their knowledge and experiences with us.”
