Trewithen Kitchen

Description

Trewithen is an important Grade I listed family home which was being updated for the next generation. It was therefore important for the kitchen design to consider the practical needs of a modern family while also respecting the aesthetic needs of the architectural history of Trewithen house itself.

Inspiration for the kitchen design was taken partly from nearby Lanhydrock House, which is famed for its Victorian back of house interiors.  At the kitchen’s centre sits a gloss painted oak cook’s table, designed by Guild Anderson with modern appliances hidden inside the generous drawers.  With the principal kitchen being limited for space however, the Guild Anderson design team worked with the project architect to commandeer the adjacent lobby space, into which bulkier appliances could be discreetly housed.

As with many of Guild Anderson’s historic house projects, clever and sympathetic placement of modern appliances is paramount for the design to work.  The lobby space was therefore designed as a fully panelled room, into which larger American style refrigerators and freezers could be hidden.  The result is an understated period appropriate panelled lobby space, acting as a high functioning pantry and food storage space for modern family living.

About

Guild Anderson is a team of 33 designers and makers based in south Wiltshire.  Their goal is to work with owners of historic country houses and estates to create high performing back of house spaces which sit naturally within their architectural surroundings.  The company’s design team achieves this delicate balance between practicality and period personality by taking a forensic brief from each client to gain a thorough understanding of how they want to live in the building.  By combining this with the architectural needs of the house, the team is able to design rooms which look as if they always belonged, made to ensure they always will.
