The brief was to design a piece in the tradition of the garden bench, but one that is unmistakably contemporary. It has to function and look well outdoors and indoors, especially in smaller gardens or rooms. To create a distinctive design language, Wales & Wales considered ways of conveying visual lightness without losing the sense of robustness one expects from a bench. They have done this by excluding arms from the design, avoiding heavy wood sections, and working out an elegant proportion. The design of the base frame gives the piece both its essential structure and a strong visual dynamic. Rod Wales: “‘Caburn’ is – in essence – a very simple design which allows the presence of the solid wood and the craft of the maker to speak on their own terms. The detailing of joints between the round section legs and rails add to the visual and structural uniqueness of this piece.”
Husband and wife team Rod and Alison Wales have been designing furniture for more than thirty years, creating pieces of timeless design, mostly in wood. Their design philosophy is characterized by what they see as “a robust, unelaborated elegance rooted in a pragmatic understanding of materials and processes”.
