What made you want to pursue a career in design?

I have always enjoyed creative subjects throughout school, because I have a natural curiosity and passion for things that require different thinking.  I enjoy the reaction I get when I see an amazing new design for the first time and I want to continue creating that feeling for others.

When did you decide you wanted to work in design?

During my art and design foundation year at college, I realised that art was such an open subject that it overwhelmed me thinking of the possibilities of artwork I could create and what it meant. Therefore, I decided I would pursue design and make beautiful functional products because the structure of the design process kept me focused and motivated towards the final outcome.

How did you find out about the Young Furniture Makers?

My university, Kingston School of Art, emailed me about a Young Furniture Makers’ talk that was happening a few years ago and the name stuck with me.

What made you want to be in the Young Furniture Makers?

During my final year on my BA Product & Furniture Design course at Kingston, I applied for the Young Furniture Makers Bespoke Award with one of my final major projects, which suited the bespoke category. I was about to graduate and realised I needed to get my work seen.

How has being part of the Young Furniture Makers benefitted you?

I have met many lovely designers from different universities, colleges and schools at the exhibition. I have also gained recognition and an online presence as an award winning bespoke furniture maker, which is great to help build my social media following and help find a job.

Tell me about your piece that was featured in the Young Furniture Makers exhibition.

My Drinks Display Cabinet is a transforming piece of furniture that accommodates how we live now, which is using the same room for work, sleep and leisure. It transforms your living space from a decorative home into a leisurely bar atmosphere. The cabinet has a mirrored display section for decorative items on show in the home, and it has two sliding tambour doors, which conceal and reveal two compartments for your beverages and glassware.

Would you recommend the Young Furniture Makers to others?

Definitely because it brings together many young talented designers in one place, which is an inspirational thing to see in person and a fantastic opportunity to network. It is a well organised and welcoming event for young designers to exhibit their work.

What is your favourite design of all time?

I have far too many favourites to compare, but I would have to say that I love Alessi products for their character, beauty and functionality combined into one. It was one of the first designs that I learnt about in school and made me realise I wanted to be part of such a fun field.

What is you ultimate career goal?

My ultimate career goal is to have my own design studio where I work with a team of great designers/artist/crafts people – who share the same fun creative vision for the products or ideas that we sell. This vision being: simple, playful, and useful with innovative flair.
