RAF Museum Hendon visit

In the RAF’s centenary year about 40 liverymen and guests were privileged to visit the recently opened RAF Museum at Hendon in scorching summer temperatures reaching 36 deg C

Following coffee and pastries Immediate Past Master Tony Smart MBE introduced Joe Bray of Rycotewood College who spoke about the recent project undertaken by his students to develop a series of public seating as part of the RAF Centenary and Museum’s Historic Hendon Project, partially sponsored by the Company. Models of the students’ proposed seating were on display around the venue

This was followed by a talk by Sebastian Cox, Head of the Air Historical Branch (RAF) in the Ministry of Defence, who expertly condensed 100 years into 30 minutes!

After lunch in the new restaurant suite we were taken by enthusiastic guides on brief tours of all the old and new buildings all themed with different aspects of the RAF’s past and future. There are currently about 90 aircraft spanning the years, all attractively presented. A particular theme at present is the role of the infant service in the First World War.

All agreed that at least a full day is required to do justice to the exhibits and we departed with thanks to the many people who had contributed to a very enjoyable day
