Design Guild Mark discussions with Charles Dedman

Designer Charles Dedman became one of the youngest recipients of a Design Guild Mark earlier this year for his Turner Carver manufactured by Sitting Firm.

We caught up with Charles to find out more about what makes him tick.

Who is your design hero?

My design hero is Russell Pinch of Pinch Design. I love the honesty of his work and intelligent application of material and technique. I relate to his business approach of collaborating with great makers on production pieces.

When did you first decide you were going to be a designer?

I decided to be a designer in 2015. When I finished my cabinet making education and knew how to apply my design mind.

What was your first big break in the industry?

My biggest break is definitely being awarded a Design Guild Mark in 2017 for my Turner Carver. The Carver stems from a college prototype and is the first product I took to the next level in my professional career.

What do you enjoy about being a designer?

As a designer, I enjoy refining a detail on a piece of furniture, be it a tapered leg or jointing solution. This process is a natural evolution, which will define the piece as a whole.

Is there a product you wish you’d designed?

Easy, the LCW chair by Charles and Ray Eames. It is the perfect use of material and tooling. It pioneered lamination and comfort.

What is the most frustrating aspect of your job?

I do get frustrated if I can’t give a project or design the time it needs to reach its full potential. I try not to compromise on quality and don’t want to send out a product that doesn’t show my values.

What is your creative process?

My creative process doesn’t really follow a system; I let it adjust for the project I am working on. Sometimes it could be seven days straight in the workshop prototyping a new table, a casual pint with fellow maker or a trip to the Design Museum. A walk in my local woods with my golden retriever certainly helps.

What influences you?

I am influenced by refined living and technique innovation. I love to see an interior or product working to its full potential, making the most out of its energy, structure and raw material.
